Michelle Yeoh took a page out of Ariana DeBose’s book by thanking all the ladies in the room during her acceptance speech at the Independent Spirit Awards. Yeoh won for Best Leading Performance for Everything everywhere at once, joining her co-stars Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu in their wins. She came up to accept her award crying from her, moved by the voting committee as her classmates voted on the awards. She promised “no swearing tonight” in her speech as she thanked the number one enemy of swearing: moms. “I want to dedicate this to all our mothers. Without our mothers, none of us would be here, ”she proclaimed, but not before thanking another group of women: the wives of the film crew. “To all the ladies sitting at that table supporting their husbands,” Yeoh said as he pointed to the EEAAO table and named all the women in solidarity, including herself. With Yeoh’s victory, Everything everywhere at once it won every category it was nominated for on tonight’s show as a dress rehearsal for what’s possibly to come at the Oscars next weekend.
